Born and raised in Colombia, Giovanna Morales Vargas is a DGC director, writer, and producer based in Vancouver, BC. She is dedicated to carving out space for Latin American voices in the Canadian film industry, championing fiction and documentary stories that reflect the depth and diversity of Latin American experiences. Giovanna highlights the personal, political, and cultural dimensions of Latinidad, centering perspectives often underrepresented on screen. This includes producing music videos for leading Latin American recording artists, further amplifying underrepresented voices through dynamic visual storytelling.

 

Her feature documentary A Perfect 14 received multiple nominations and six awards, including Best Documentary at the Twin Cities Film Festival and Best Writing at the Women Texas Film Festival. Now streaming worldwide on Prime Video, it remained among Canada’s top 10 documentaries for several weeks.


Her produced narrative feature Girl Gone Bad premiered at Kevin Smith’s SModcastle Film Festival, going on to win the Audience Award for Best Foreign Feature at Another Hole in the Head.. Now streaming on Tubi and Prime Video US/UK.

 

She is currently developing multiple projects and filming Women of Reggaeton, a documentary exploring Latin Pop and Reggaeton as global phenomena through the lens of women artists and the feminist movements reshaping the genre.

 

An alumna of the AIDC–Hot Docs Canadian Delegation (2023), the Whistler Film Festival Documentary Lab (2023–2024), and the DOC North West Breakthrough Program (2024), Giovanna continues to deepen her commitment to culturally rooted storytelling.
